Bakjes

‘Bakjes’ (Dutch for containers) are commonly used for vegetables, meat and cheese. They might contain two avocados, one octopus tentacle, 60g of three kinds of sprouts, each one separated by the bakje’s divisional form, two hamburger patties, one fillet of pickled haring and so on.

These plastic containers are ingenious and ubiquitous. Designed with beautiful graphic indentations. They are stupid. Unnecessary, irresponsible, normal. Quickly wasted. Icons of our age. Clever and dumb.

plastic cast impressions in sickly sweet colours / turning the bakje less anonymous / more permanent / solid though light / carving my own marks / thinking of ancient ruins and artefacts / attacking the bakje with crude and spirited handwork / creating and destroying / primal / archaic / present
